Capoeira is a martial art that
originated in Brazil. It was developed in Brazil by African slaves. Its aesthetics are unique to itself, while
drawing from its rich African heritage. Capoeira is more than just another martial art form. For its strong
expression, play and personal interaction Capoeira is considered by many to be a performing art, as well.
These expressions and movements were given birth more than 400 years ago
during a time of difficult oppression and slavery. The fearless energy that dwelt in the first Capoeiristas
still lives today into the 21st century. Capoeira is characterized
by deceptive kicks, escapes, acrobatics, and gymnastic movements. Capoeira is considered a "jogo" or
game. The game or jogo is played inside a circle of participants known as
a 'roda' (hoda).
Most
movements flow out of the 'ginga', a basic dance pattern that disguises its power to attack. The emphasis is
to catch your partner off guard. As you challenge your partner to respond to your movements, he does the same.
The roda is led by musicians, fellow Capoeira players, who play instruments specific to the art.
